Coordination to Combat Hate Speech After the Earthquake: Our Pain is Shared, Our Hope is Shared

After the large earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, news about violence keeps coming from the disaster provinces while hate speech is circulating.

The Coordination to Combat Hate Speech After the Earthquake has also issued a statement on the events, calling for solidarity and calling for unity.

"Let us unite against individuals and institutions that seek and produce provocation and manipulation! We call on politicians and influential actors in the public sphere to take a stand against everything and everyone that tries to disturb the social peace, and call on the public to remain calm and level-headed. We call on all individuals and broadcasters covering the disaster area to refrain from disseminating generalized, discriminatory and targeted content."

Our pain and hope are shared

The statement reads as follows;

After the earthquakes that severely damaged our country, the news of violence from the disaster areas provoke fear and concern in all of us.

The earthquake has caused great destruction in cities such as Gaziantep, Hatay, Şanlıurfa, Kilis, Adana and Osmaniye, where refugee and migrant populations are concentrated. Therefore, refugees and migrants are among the millions of earthquake victims affected by the disaster in the region.

Refugees and migrants, like everyone else in the region, were harmed by the earthquake, lost their relatives, became homeless, and began moving to other cities for this reason.

After all this disaster we have experienced, unfortunately, allegations of information pollution, distortion and targeting of refugees and immigrants in the disaster area and surrounding cities are spreading in social media, causing social chaos and conflicts.

Blaming all refugees and migrants for the unrest in a crisis will only deepen the conflict environment.

While the whole world is trying to share in the pain we are experiencing, while we are all united in the spirit of solidarity, let us bind each other's wounds instead of raging!

For both our pain and our hope are shared

This is our call to all, especially to politicians and media organizations.

Let us act together against people and institutions that deliberately provoke and manipulate!

We call on politicians and influential players in the public sphere to stand up to anything and anyone who tries to disturb the social peace and call on the public to remain calm and level-headed.

We call on all individuals and broadcasters covering the disaster area to refrain from disseminating generalized, discriminatory and targeted content.
