A Call to Expose Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP)

The Coalition Against SLAPPs in Europe, which works against SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) cases filed through the abuse of legal processes targeting journalists, activists, and civil society actors across Europe, has issued a call for nominations for the 2026 European SLAPP Contest.

As part of the competition, which aims to highlight the most malicious lawsuits targeting journalists, human rights defenders, and civil society actors throughout 2025, cases involving legal harassment, disproportionate compensation claims, or attempts to silence the public are being sought for nomination.

The cases selected as nominees in the competition will be announced to the public, and the "winners" of the competition will be revealed at a ceremony to be held on April 28, 2026, in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The initiative aims to raise awareness about SLAPP cases, expose the misuse of the judicial system, and support actors working for the public good.

During the application process, individuals and organizations can submit nominations via the official form shared by the coalition. Cases that can be nominated include lawsuits listed in the coalition’s verified SLAPP list or newly identified cases.

Nominations can be submitted through this link.
