Call from Women's Platform for Equality: Don't touch the law, enforce it

ESIK – Women's Platform for Equality published an information note on the Turkish Penal Code and the Bill on Amending Certain Laws, which was on the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, and said "don't touch the laws, enforce them".

In the information note it prepared, ESIK underlined that there are some positive regulations in the bill, which was introduced to the public as the "reform" on combating violence against women on 8 March before it was brought to the Parliament, but that there are no effective solutions to prevent violence.

In the note, it was stated that the only and urgent step to be taken to prevent violence against women is to effectively implement existing laws and international conventions and to put an end to anti-egalitarian discourses and practices in all areas of social life, especially in the judiciary.

The problem is not with the laws, but with the non-enforcement of the laws.

"Those who do not act under the law, those who do not enforce the laws, should stop new legislation that they will not comply with and enforce," the statement said.

The statement included the following:

"If the government wants to do something, it can take the first step by implementing the Istanbul Convention, for which one year has passed since the decision to withdraw its signature. There is a need for a holistic women's policy, from adequate personnel to special budget arrangements, to eliminate violence against women. There is a need to establish a robust institutional mechanism across the country, consisting of women's counseling centers, shelters in the districts, sexual violence crisis centers, and an effective hotline.
