Civil Society Comes Together in Ankara to Combat Desertification

Yeşil Orman School will organize the "Civil Society Workshop for Combating Desertification" in Ankara on July 25, 2026, aiming to strengthen the role of civil society in fighting desertification, land degradation, and drought. The workshop is being organized within the scope of the RE-LDN (Regional Engagement for Land Degradation Neutrality) Project, implemented by Yeşil Orman School with the support of the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP Turkey).

At the workshop, organizations working in the fields of land management and climate, especially civil society organizations accredited by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), will come together. Within the scope of the program, topics such as climate change adaptation, land degradation neutrality, capacity building, dissemination of good practices, and opportunities for national and international cooperation will be discussed.

At the workshop, which will be held with the joint participation of 22 civil society organizations accredited to the UNCCD in Turkey, the aim is to establish a common approach among civil society and to act jointly on land governance ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP31) to be held in Antalya in November 2026.

As one of the key outcomes of the workshop, the planning of a joint side event to be held at COP31 and the development of lasting cooperation among civil society organizations are targeted. Organizers state that the joint projects and collaborations to be developed after the workshop will make significant contributions to Turkey's efforts for land degradation neutrality and combating desertification.

According to experts, healthy soils are of strategic importance for food security, the protection of water resources, the maintenance of biodiversity, and adaptation to climate change. For this reason, strong collaborations to be established between public institutions, academia, and civil society are expected to play a critical role in developing sustainable land management policies.
