The Mozilla Foundation will provide a grant of USD 50,000 and 12 months of incubation support to projects that use artificial intelligence to strengthen democracy, prevent disinformation, and increase civic engagement. The deadline for the first phase of the program, which is open only to technology teams that have a working prototype and are beyond the idea stage, is March 16, 2026.
Program Focus Areas
Projects applying are expected to place artificial intelligence at the core of the solution, not merely as an “add-on.” The primary themes are:
- Information Fidelity: Use of Large Language Models (LLMs) for politically neutral content moderation, fact-checking, preventing bots and fake accounts.
- Civic Activation: Protecting freedom of expression in digital spaces, empowering citizens against propaganda, and developing defense tools against digital repression by authoritarian regimes.
Who Can Apply? (Critical Requirements)
This is not an idea competition; it is a “Build Cohort” program.
- Working Technology: Teams with a usable, working technology (prototype) can apply, not just an idea or a wireframe—even if the prototype is in an early stage.
- Open Source Commitment: It is mandatory for the project (or at least part of its codebase) to be open source, or for teams to commit to making it open source during the grant period.
- Implementation Capacity: There must be a committed team capable of delivering the project during the 12-month program.
Support Provided
- A cash grant of USD 50,000 per project for 10 selected projects.
- 12 months of intensive incubation (mentorship) support for product development, user needs assessment, and sustainable growth (starting June 2026).
Application Timeline
The process proceeds in two phases:
- Initial Project Proposal Deadline: March 16, 2026
- Announcement of Finalists: April 2, 2026
- Full Application Submission: April 15, 2026
