Priority Focus Areas
Projects applying must be directly related to at least one of the thematic areas below:
- Biodiversity: Conservation of endangered species and endemic plants/animals in their natural habitats (in-situ).
- Mitigating Climate Change Impacts: Energy efficiency, renewable energy applications, and conservation of carbon sinks.
- Land Degradation and Desertification: Sustainable agricultural practices, erosion control, and rehabilitation of pastures.
- International Waters & Chemicals/Waste: Protecting water resources from pollution, reducing persistent organic pollutants and plastic waste.
Who can apply?
- NGOs: Local and national Associations and Foundations working in the fields of environment, development, women, or youth.
- Cooperatives: Women's cooperatives, agricultural development, and forest cooperatives.
- Local Groups: Neighborhood initiatives or village associations.
(Public institutions, municipalities, and universities cannot receive direct funding but may support projects as "partners" or "associates").
Grant Amount and Co-financing
The maximum grant amount provided per project is 50,000 USD.
Co-financing is very important in GEF SGP projects. The applicant is expected to contribute an equal amount of co-financing (at a 1:1 ratio) to the requested grant, either in-kind (voluntary work, office use, etc.) or in cash.
Application Process
Applications proceed in two stages.
After the first stage, in which the idea is briefly and clearly explained, institutions passing this stage are invited to submit detailed budget and activity plans.
