Information Note on the Right to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly

Freedom of peaceful assembly is a fundamental human right that everyone has, regardless of their identity, belief or opinion. It guarantees that individuals can make their voices heard through demonstrations, marches, protests and similar events. This right is not limited to physical spaces; it also applies online. States are obliged to facilitate this right and protect peaceful assemblies.

The former UN Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Maina Kiai, published an information note in November 2014, which discusses in detail the scope and limits of this right and the responsibilities of states in the light of international instruments.

You can access the information note from the attached document.
