Joint Response from 17 LGBT+ Organizations: Trans and Intersex Individuals' Right to Hormones Cannot Be Denied!

LGBTQ+ individuals and LGBTQ+ rights advocates responded to the Ministry of Health's decision to raise the age for hormone use for trans and intersex individuals from 18 to 21 with a statement, saying, “Hormones are not just a medicine, they are a guarantee of life and the future!” and demanding that the decision be reversed. The statement added, “We will not let this injustice go unchallenged! We will speak out against these attacks with the #HormonHakkım campaign.”

The statement emphasized that this decision has no legal basis. It said, “This piece of paper, which is legally null and void, contradicts existing rights, the constitution, and international treaties.”

The statement, signed by 17 LGBT+ organizations, reminded that individuals who have reached the age of 18 have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and health according to the Turkish Civil Code and international agreements. It was stated that this right cannot be abolished by an administrative order.

The statement drew attention to the difficulties faced by young trans and intersex individuals, using the following words:

“A hormone medication is not just a hormone medication! Hormone regulators are not only the foundation of the physical, mental, and social well-being of trans and intersex individuals, but also a vital tool for their adaptation to social life.”

Pembe Hayat also referred to the World Health Organization and other international health authorities, emphasizing that delayed access to hormones reduces quality of life, has negative effects on psychological health, and leads to social isolation.
