A new route has been added to the Hrant Dink Foundation's multilingual cultural heritage app KarDes. This digital content, titled “Istanbul's Water Heritage Tour,” sheds light on the city's multi-layered past through its historical water structures. The new route invites visitors to witness the water structures and stories that have left their mark on Istanbul's memory, from the Zeyrek Cistern to the Çinili Hamam, from the Valens Aqueduct to the Ayşe Sultan Fountain, and from Istanbul's water carriers to its water carriers.
The new route reveals the city's infrastructure history, architectural heritage, and cultural diversity through cisterns, fountains, aqueducts, and other water structures that have survived from different periods of Istanbul's history to the present day. It also examines the historical traces of access to and use of water in the context of social life. The tour stops include structures such as cisterns, aqueducts, bathhouses, fountains, water dispensers, mosques, and churches, as well as the stories of Istanbul's water carriers, porters, bath attendants, and fishermen.
Enriched with text, visuals, and maps, this digital tour enables users to explore Istanbul's relationship with water both on-site and online.
