This term, KRE-AKT focuses on critical and rights-based approaches that evaluate both the expanding and limiting effects of technology on spaces of expression. Within the program, technology is addressed not just as digital tools in use, but as a domain that affects people’s ways of self-expression, visibility, safety, and participation in public debates.
Applications are open to projects developed at the intersection of fields like online expression and content creation, access to information, participation in digital public spaces, censorship and self-censorship, with technology-related topics such as social media, digital platforms, internet infrastructure, digital security, data, algorithms, and artificial intelligence.
Which topics will be supported?
The program supports project applications under two main categories.
- Under the Technology for Freedom category, projects will be evaluated that use artificial intelligence and digital tools to develop new forms of expression, facilitate access to information, strengthen solidarity networks, enhance digital security, and engage in data-driven advocacy.
- Under the Freedom from Technology category, projects will be supported that examine the restrictive impacts of technology such as surveillance, censorship, digital oppression, online hate speech, disinformation, and algorithmic visibility, and aim to develop solutions in these fields.
Who can apply?
Activists, journalists, independent media workers, content creators, researchers, academics, data analysts, artists, civil society organizations, initiatives, and individuals working in the field of technology and digital rights and freedom of expression can apply to the program.
Selected participants will receive capacity building support, training and workshops, and visibility support. Additionally, two participants will be provided with micro financial support.
