Kushlan Research Award: Applications Open for Ciconiiform Biology and Conservation

The Waterbird Society has started accepting applications for the Kushlan Research Award, which aims to support scientific research on the order Ciconiiformes (Storks), covering herons, storks, ibises, spoonbills, and species taxonomically related to these groups.

Purpose of the Program

The Kushlan Research Award aims to promote scientific advancement in studies conducted on wading birds. Research proposals focusing especially on the following areas are supported:

  • Inter-species relationships within the order Ciconiiformes,
  • Status, distribution, and population sizes of lesser-known species in this order,
  • Original studies on the biology, ecology, and conservation of these species.

Who can apply?

  • Open for global applications: Applications are accepted from anywhere in the world, including Turkey.
  • No status restrictions: Students, professionals, and amateur researchers may apply.
  • Age, nationality, educational level, or financial status are not used as evaluation criteria.

Grant support

  • Support per project: 1,000 – 7,000 USD
  • Number of projects to be supported: One or more projects can be supported each year.

Important dates

  • Application deadline: February 1, 2026
  • Announcement of results: March 15, 2026 (estimated)

Application process

Applications must be prepared in English and submitted electronically (usually via Google Form or by email). The application file must not exceed 4 pages and should consist of two sections:

  • Narrative Section (max 3 pages):

Name of applicant, project title, background/rationale, objectives or hypotheses, methods, significance of the study, and references.

  • Budget Section (1 page):

Breakdown of requested funds, total project cost, and other funding sources if applicable.
