New Research Call from Horizon Europe: The Impact of Economic Inequality on Democracy

The European Union's research and innovation programme Horizon Europe has published a new call for proposals to examine the impact of economic inequalities on democracy. This call aims to investigate the effects of economic inequalities, such as income, wealth and asset distribution, on trust in democratic institutions, political polarisation, social cohesion and voting behaviour.

One of the focal points of the research will be to understand the impact of the ‘perception of inequality’ on individuals' commitment to democratic values. The projects are also expected to seek answers to the following questions:

  • How does the perception of inequality affect trust in democracy?
  • How does income and wealth inequality shape democratic participation?
  • How do intersectional factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, and disability transform this relationship?
  • How do local media and community networks affect perceptions of inequality?
  • How do geographical variables such as rural-urban differences or migration play a role in this relationship?

The call is open to researchers and organisations working in fields such as social sciences, political science, media studies, and sociology.
