Open Rivers Programme: Call for Grants for River Restoration

The Open Rivers Programme is accepting applications to support projects that lead to the removal of dams and other barriers to restore river flow, function, and biodiversity across Europe.

The mission of the program is to restore endangered European rivers by providing funding for projects to remove small dams, enabling rivers to flow freely again and reconnecting healthy ecosystems.

Who Can Apply?

  • Charitable organizations and organizations with not-for-profit status. It is expected that most applicants will be organizations with an environmental focus and a track record of river restoration.
  • Public sector entities, private organizations, and community groups are also encouraged to participate as project partners.

Grant Award

The grant support is divided into different project categories (e.g., barrier identification, pre-demolition, demolition). Grant amounts vary depending on the project and category. For example, one previously funded project received €106,473.

Application Deadline: 31st October 2025, at 13:00 CET.

Application Process

Applications are submitted via the programme's online portal. Applicants are required to carefully read the Information Guide for applicants, available on the website, before applying.
