Opportunity for Young People: Applications Open for UNITAR SDGs and Digital Futures Programme

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Hiroshima Office invites young people aged 18–24 to apply for the programme “SDGs and Digital Futures: Changemaking through AI/Digital Storytelling.

This programme aims to empower young changemakers with the skills to use artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools to create impactful stories for social change. The programme will begin on 7 June 2025 and will last approximately three months.

Application deadline: 31 May 2025, 10:00 JST (UTC+9)

Programme Structure:

  1. Phase 1 (Online): Participants will receive training on the SDGs, the ethical use of AI, creating art with generative AI, and digital storytelling.
  2. Phase 2 (In-Person Study Visit): Held in Hiroshima, this phase includes cultural immersion, workshops on AI and digital art, and project feedback sessions.
  3. Phase 3 (Project Completion): Participants will finalize their projects with online mentoring and attend a virtual graduation ceremony.
  4. Phase 4 (Exhibition): A major international exhibition showcasing participants’ projects will take place in October or November 2025.

Eligibility criteria

  • Reside in Hiroshima or other regions in Asia (those living in other parts of Japan are not eligible),
  • Be between 18–24 years old,
  • Be passionate about creating positive change in their community,
  • Be able to communicate in English,
  • Commit 2–3.5 hours per week to the programme,
  • Be available to attend all programme dates,
  • Have reliable internet access,
  • Have access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer,
  • Be committed to completing the programme.

Cost and support

Participation is free of charge.

For participants from outside Hiroshima: UNITAR will cover round-trip airfare, meals, accommodation, local transportation, visa support, and travel insurance. Participants are responsible for passport and domestic travel costs.

For participants from Hiroshima: UNITAR will provide meals. Participants must cover their own transport to the UNITAR Hiroshima Office and accommodation costs.
