Purpose and Scope of the Program
The purpose of the program is to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities in the media and to bring to light the systemic issues underlying gender inequality through investigative journalism.
There is no specific budget range or minimum/maximum limit; projects of all sizes will be considered. However, the average grant amount provided by the institution is around 5,000 USD.
There is no strict limit on the duration of the projects; evaluation processes may be accelerated according to urgent situations on the ground.
Supported Activities / Areas
- Data-driven projects that tell stories of the resilience, strength, and leadership of women and girls in the face of global crises, violence, and discrimination.
- Short documentaries with an ambitious distribution/broadcast plan.
- Costs for external experts (contractors) involved in the project, such as data researchers, illustrators, or data visualization/story designers.
Eligibility Criteria (Who can apply?)
- Institutional and Individual Status: Freelance journalists, staff journalists, newsrooms, and media groups that come together around a specific project idea may apply.
- Applications from Turkey (Geographical Scope): The opportunity is open to all journalists/newsrooms in the US and worldwide. Therefore, NGOs operating in the field of media and journalism in Turkey, independent newsrooms, and journalists can apply directly to this fund.
- Important Restrictions (Overhead and Administrative Expenses): The institution’s general operational expenses (administrative fees/overhead such as rent, bills, insurance) are strictly not covered. Staff salaries (except in exceptional cases, salaries of regular newsroom staff are not funded). Advocacy and marketing campaigns are strictly not supported. Book writing, feature-length films, seed money for startups, routine breaking news, equipment purchases, and data projects solely aimed at academic research are outside the scope.
