Rainforest Trust 2026 – Applications Open for Grants to Protect and Expand Natural Areas

Rainforest Trust has announced the 2026 application period for its “Protected or Conserved Area Creation” and “Feasibility” grant programs, aimed at protecting critically endangered species and ecosystems vital to combating climate change, in partnership with local communities, Indigenous peoples, and civil society organizations.

There are two different types of grants within the scope of the program.

  • Feasibility Awards: Generally, support of $10,000 USD (sometimes higher) is provided for studies aimed at assessing the potential for establishing protected areas.
  • Protected Area Creation Awards: Although there is no specific upper limit, projects can receive support exceeding $250,000 USD depending on the project.

Funded projects cover the conservation of critically endangered species, the safeguarding of forests and wetlands with high carbon storage capacity, and processes such as land acquisition or granting legal protection status (such as national parks, OECM). However, afforestation projects, general operating expenses, and long-term research are not supported under the program.

Registered non-governmental organizations that are legally permitted to operate in the project country may apply for the program. While tropical and subtropical regions are prioritized, applications meeting strong conservation criteria from other regions (including Turkey) are also considered.

Application Dates

  • Continuously open for feasibility and projects under $250,000 USD (rolling basis)
  • Projects exceeding $250,000 USD are evaluated on March 1, July 1, and October 1 (it is recommended to submit pre-applications 4 months in advance).
