
The opening ceremony was attended by Mehmet Öntürk, Mayor of Hatay Metropolitan Municipality, Ambassador Thomas Hans Ossowski, Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Turkey, Ayzen Atalay, Second Chairman of the Board of Directors of STGM and many representatives of civil society organizations.
"CSOs always shape the future of the city”
In his speech at the ceremony, Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mehmet Öntürk emphasized the importance of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with the following words:
“I care that NGOs are strong, not only in times of disasters, but they are always the organizations that shape the future of the city. I am also happy that such a center has been opened while our city is getting back on its feet.”
“Solidarity and Cooperation are Priority”
Ambassador Ossowski emphasized the power of solidarity:
“It is gratifying to see the solidarity you are showing here. Today we need to focus on how we can build on this common resilience and solidarity.”
Symbols of Solidarity: The Olive Tree at the Heart of the Mosaic
The “Solidarity Mosaic”, symbolizing solidarity, was also introduced at the opening. The olive tree at the center of the mosaic represented peace, wisdom and resilience. STGM officials explained this symbol in the following words:
“The olive tree, which has deep roots, symbolizes resilience and strong bonds. Today, we are placing this symbol at the heart of our mosaic. Our aim is to be firmly connected to each other like the olive tree and to grow stronger together.”
Participants supported the solidarity process by making symbolic contributions to the mosaic.
Strong Cooperation in Disaster Management
In her opening speech, Ayzen Atalay, Second Chairperson of STGM Board of Directors, stated that the center will be a meeting and solidarity point for both national and international CSOs. “We aim to increase the capacity of civil society in disaster risk management. This center, which will strengthen local solidarity, is based on our understanding of leaving no one behind.”
Antakya Office was opened within the scope of the “Supporting the Capacity of Civil Society Organizations in Disaster Risk Management Project” supported by the European Union. The 30-month project aims to increase solidarity, integrate international standards into disaster risk management and strengthen cooperation on critical issues such as climate change.
