The story of fighting deep poverty in 'Impact-Focused Conversations'

Önder Uçar, Research and Advocacy Coordinator at the Deep Poverty Network, was a guest on the latest episode of SocialUp's Impact-Focused Conversations series. Uçar discussed the invisible face of poverty and the solidarity models developed in this struggle. In the conversation, Uçar defined deep poverty as “the inability to access the most basic human rights for generations” and emphasized that systematic poverty can only be solved through rights-based policies.

“The children are hungry. They cannot go to school because they do not have clothes to wear.”

Uçar drew attention to the impact of deep poverty on children with the following statement: “Even going to school is a separate issue. There are children who cannot go to school because they do not have clothes to wear and can only shop at the cafeteria once a week. They are hungry, and this directly affects their development.”

“We need to be visible”

Drawing attention to the power of civil society, Uçar called for volunteer support: “Making us visible is a huge support. You can join us in many processes, from shipping to research, as a volunteer. More kindergartens, more school meals, and a stronger social state are no longer a luxury but a necessity for the children of this country.”

SosyalUp Impact-Focused Conversations is designed to amplify the voices of civil society, social enterprises, and impactful individuals in Turkey to wider audiences; to inspire those who want to generate social benefit; to highlight good examples; and to strengthen faith in civil society.
