Support for Ideas Transforming Agricultural and Food Systems

The "Moonshots for Development (M4D)" initiative, carried out by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and its partners, is seeking technological solutions to enhance the resilience of small-scale farmers and rural communities. Grants of up to a total of USD 360,000 will be awarded to projects in the areas of insurance, agroecology, and digital agriculture. The application deadline is March 30, 2026.

The M4D Open Innovation Challenge, launched to find solutions to the climate crisis and vulnerabilities facing food systems, has started accepting applications for 2026. The program is not just a competition, but also a multi-stage support mechanism through which ventures develop their business models and fund their pilot implementations.

Priority Areas

Projects applying are expected to provide solutions to one of the following topics.

  • Insurance Solutions: Accessible models of climate, crop, or livestock insurance for smallholder farmers.
  • Reducing Vulnerability: Solutions that enhance the resilience of rural communities against natural disasters or humanitarian crises, in line with the "do no harm" principle.
  • Digital Extension: Data-driven digital platforms offering information and advisory services to farmers.
  • Agroecology: Innovations supporting sustainable production techniques, soil restoration, and access to local markets.

The program should give special attention to solutions that integrate the following two technologies in particular.

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Use of AI for data analysis, forecasting, and modeling.
  • Geospatial Analysis: Use of satellite imagery and remote sensing data.

Support Provided

The program has a 3-stage structure.

  • Phase 0 (Bootcamp): Selected teams participate in a virtual training camp.
  • Phase 1 (Pilot Preparation): $10,000 grant and coaching for successful teams.
  • Phase 2 (Pilot Implementation): $100,000 pilot funding for the top teams.
  • Phase 3 (Scaling): An additional $250,000 in support for finalists.

In total, a team can receive up to $360,000 in funding.

Who Can Apply?

  • Startups: Early-stage or growth-stage technology companies.
  • Civil Society Organizations: NGOs developing technology-based solutions.
  • Research Institutions: Academic teams with a viable product.

Applications will be accepted through the M4D website until March 30, 2026.
