After graduating from Ege University, Department of Philosophy, Hakan Ataman started to work actively in rights-based non-governmental organizations for about 25 years. He is one of the founding members of Amnesty International Turkey Branch, and worked at Helsinki Citizens' Assembly between the years 2012-2018 as a project coordinator at the Association. He acted as a member and representative of the association.

Hakan Ataman, who has been working on human rights advocacy in the USA for a while within the scope of the 2015 Human Rights Defenders Program of the New York-based Columbia University Human Rights Studies Institute, is the coordinator of the ‘Right of Participation and Freedom of Association Project at the Civil Society Development Center.
