After graduating from Ege University, Department of Philosophy, Hakan Ataman started to work actively in rights-based non-governmental organizations for about 25 years. He is one of the founding members of Amnesty International Turkey Branch, and worked at Helsinki Citizens' Assembly between the years 2012-2018 as a project coordinator at the Association. He acted as a member and representative of the association.
Hakan Ataman worked on human rights advocacy in the United States for a period of time as part of the 2015 Human Rights Defenders Programme of the Columbia University Institute for Human Rights Studies, based in New York.
He works as a policy monitoring expert in the Freedom of Association Monitoring Project.
