What is the EU Civil Society Strategy Open Public Consultation?

The European Union defines civil society organizations as non-state, non-profit, non-partisan and non-violent. This definition includes human rights defenders. Relevant stakeholders include individuals, national authorities, EU institutions, international organizations, CSO networks, CSOs, human rights and equality bodies, academia and donors.

At various times, the EU gathers views through participatory processes from these structures, which play a key role in the implementation of EU policies on the ground, through awareness raising, training, service delivery, policy monitoring and advocacy.

Building on the Democracy Defense Package supported by Commission Recommendation 2023/2836 and aiming to establish a framework for action at EU and Member State level, the EU Civil Society Strategy has involved EU Member States as well as candidate countries for EU membership, such as the Republic of Turkey. The main objective is to strengthen dialogue with civil society actors, provide them with support and protection to enable them to continue their work.
