More than a question: Information Center
Do you know that moment when, in the middle of the night, you’re the last one left in the office, staring blankly at the most complicated-looking budget table in a grant application? Or the hours spent trying to figure out what a single sentence in a regulation actually means?
Or perhaps it’s that unexpected problem, the one that appears like a wall right in the middle of your project, just when everything seemed to be going well.
For every one of us working, volunteering, or serving on the boards of civil society organizations, these moments are all too familiar. And in those moments, a single question in our minds can grow into what feels like an insurmountable mountain: “If only I could consult someone I trust right now.”
But these moments, which we often see as shortcomings, may in fact be when we are most open to growing stronger. Because every transformation, every step of learning and empowerment, begins with such a question, born from an immediate need.
At STGM’s Information Center, we deeply value these moments and these questions. For us, every question is more than a request for support. Each one is an invitation to a journey we take together, a kind of companionship.
You are not alone on this journey
This journey often begins with your needs. You can think of the open-access resources on the Information Center’s website as a collective memory, a shared library built over the years from questions asked by civil society and the answers we have provided.
Our grant announcements, Funding Sources Database, e-library, and Frequently Asked Questions section create a common space where you can explore at your own pace and according to your needs, without having to ask anyone directly. This is the first step of discovery, guided by your own curiosity and effort. Our role is to keep this space rich, up-to-date, and accessible so that you have a safe ground on which to take that first step.
Sometimes a question needs a listener
But what if the answer you’re looking for isn’t among these general resources? What if your question is specific to your organization and requires a deeper dialogue? That is when the second stage of the journey begins: dialogue.
An email you send to [email protected] is not just an email to us—it is the start of a conversation. Our experts read your question not only to answer it but to understand it. At this stage, our principles of confidentiality and equal distance are your greatest assurance. You can share what’s on your mind freely, knowing that everything you tell us is safe and approached without prejudice. Because sometimes, what a question needs most is not just an answer, but a companion who listens carefully.
Walking together
Sometimes, however, an email or a phone call is not enough. The issue may be so complex that the solution can only be found shoulder to shoulder. This is when our journey deepens, and dialogue turns into real collaboration. Imagine, for example, meeting in an online session to discuss your project draft. Our goal is not to write the draft for you. Our goal is to ask the right questions, helping you strengthen your own idea and your own voice. In longer-term programs, such as our Organizational Coaching Program, this companionship continues regularly over a set period. It truly becomes a way of working together.
Not for you, but with you
At this point, we want to be very clear.
Why doesn’t the Information Center write a project for you, refer you directly to a lawyer, or take on tasks that your organization should carry out itself? Because we hold firmly to a core principle: strengthening together.
This principle is rooted in the conviction that the true subject of empowerment is the organizations themselves. If we do the work on your behalf, we may solve one immediate problem, but in the long run we would weaken your most valuable asset—your own capacity to act. That is why our aim is to think through the problem together with you, to share our experiences, and to ensure that you continue on your path with your own strength. For us, valuing joint empowerment is an expression of the respect we have for civil society’s own power.
Every question is an invitation
Now, let’s return to those lonely moments, to that single question in your mind. That question is not a burden, but a potential. Because at STGM’s Information Center, we see every question that reaches us as an invitation—to learn together, to stand in solidarity, and to make civil society stronger, together.
And yes, every major transformation begins with a small question.
So, what’s your question?
