Go For: It is Unlawful to Expel University Students from KYK Dormitories

As evacuations continued from disaster-hit provinces following last week's massive earthquakes, the evacuation of univeristy dormitories began following President Tayyip Erdoğan's Feb. 11 declaration that "Universities will switch to distance learning and dormitories will become guesthouses." The Forum of Youth Organizations issued a briefing on the issue, stating that this decision is against the law.

In its statement, Go For stressed that the state should guarantee the right to education of all young people, especially youth in the earthquake region, and said that all other options and mechanisms should be activated by the public before the limited number of KYK dormitories to provide the accommodations that earthquake victims need.

Recalling that young people who were unplannedly withdrawn from their schools during the pandemic period were condemned to loneliness and rights violations, they stressed that necessary measures should be taken to prevent a similar occurrence from happening again.

The Execution Regarding Credit and Dormitories Agency is Unlawful

Go For recalled in its statement that the state of emergency applies to 10 provinces and said that it is against the law to temporarily or indefinitely close student dormitories in provinces other than the disaster-hit cities.

"As stated in the parliamentary resolution, the state of emergency was declared for 10 cities affected by the earthquake and does not apply to other provinces. Therefore, it is against the law to implement the decision to temporarily or indefinitely close the dormitories in our provinces outside the cities where the state of emergency was declared."

New rights violations revealed: students made homeless

The statement said that the properties of students housed in KYK dormitories have been cleared out without their permission, while students who were forced to leave the dormitories are facing the problem of housing.

"These unplanned relocations/removals, without asking about and/or ignoring the current situation of the youth, violate the private lives of the people living in the KYK dormitories and make the youth homeless, displaced and leave some helpless."

Distance education is a model that cannot be applied in a healthy way for Turkey.

The statement also recalled that distance education, which was applied during the pandemic period, has already caused many problems, and noted that many young people in Turkey do not have the necessary digital equipment and internet connection for distance education.

"A significant majority of young people living in Turkey still do not have access to the digital equipment and internet connection required for distance education, and those who do indicate that the efficiency of the education does not even reach 50%, while distance education/online education is a model that cannot be applied in a healthy way in Turkey."
