According to the report, 2021 was a year in which the pressure on media organizations and journalists deepened from all sides. Although the number of imprisoned journalists decreased in 2021, the trials against journalists continued unabated, while the field of freedom of the press was further narrowed by political, administrative, and financial mechanisms.

Another important restrictive mechanism that came to the fore in the field of freedom of the press in 2021, in which many judicial penalties were imposed in addition to administrative penalties in the field of television and internet broadcasting, were the decisions made by the media regulation institutions RTÜK and the Press Announcement Agency, which are required to act independently as per the law.
