Living Heritage of Antakya’s Dom

Civil Dreams Association and Architecture Sans Frontières UK (ASF-UK) have released the findings of their joint research project “Mapping the Unseen,” carried out with the support of University College London (UCL). The project documents the living environments of the Dom community in Antakya, largely destroyed by the February 2023 earthquakes, aiming to contribute to a fair and culturally appropriate resettlement process that upholds the right to adequate housing.

The study, which explores collective memory, everyday practices, and spatial use, reveals that despite facing exclusion and invisibility, Dom neighborhoods possess strong traditions of solidarity and a rich communal culture. It highlights that the Dom community is an integral part of Antakya’s multilayered social fabric.

The report underscores the need for a community-based and just reconstruction approach that supports the Dom people in preserving and carrying their living heritage into the future. Rebuilding Antakya, it stresses, requires not only restoring physical structures but also strengthening the social bonds, shared knowledge, and cultural relationships that hold the city’s diverse communities together.
