About the Organization
UAF is a feminist fund to protect and strengthen the human rights of women and trans* people at critical moments. The UAF intervenes when activists face a big gain or a serious threat.
Priority Areas
The Urgent Action Fund was created to support organizations led by women and trans* human rights defenders or women and trans* activists for situations that arise unexpectedly and require immediate action.
It provides two urgent support mechanisms:
- Security Grants: can be used when the security of women or trans* rights defenders/activists/organizations are threatened by their advocacy work;
- Opportunity Grants: can be used when an unexpected situation or opportunity arises that could lead to a positive change in law, policy, or public attitude for women and LGBTI people when it needs to be advocated at the local level.
About Application
Applications can be made in any language and every day of the year. Applications are answered within 72 hours, if time is not required due to translation. The maximum amount to be paid for an application is 8,000 USD. Payment is made within 1 to 10 days after the application is accepted. The security grant must be used within 3 months and the opportunity grant within 6 months.
Applications must meet the following conditions:
Woman/trans leader: Women/trans people should be the primary decision makers of the organization, group, or action.
Human rights focus of women/trans people: The application should support the human rights of women or transgender people using non-violent strategies.
Unexpected and time-limited: The event or situation giving rise to the application must be unexpected and require immediate intervention. The action must be taken within 3 months after the acceptance of the application.
Supported and network-based: Applications should be supported locally or globally by other groups in relevant areas.
