İlhan Tekeli, in his article titled "Approaching the Right to the Environment from the Local", states that environmental discourses have always been based on doomsday scenarios, so environmental problems in the local area have been approached with responsibilities and duties from above.

In his article, Tekeli emphasizes that approaching environmentalism locally will enrich the environmental movement. In his article, Tekeli states, “…the development of local environmental policies should be placed within the system that regulates local development and performs its governance. Volunteer-based local initiatives or local non-governmental organizations will play an important role in the formation of such a governance system. These initiatives will be developed by active citizens who believe in participatory democracy”, emphasizing the importance of citizens' participation in environmental problems from their locality.
