A Guide to Gender Mainstreaming in Civil Society Organizations: The Birlikte Model

In the second implementation period of the BİRLİKTE Program, which is designed as an institutional development journey that supports the strengthening of civil society organizations in Turkey and centers on the spirit of solidarity and collective learning, we worked side by side with CSOs to integrate gender equality into all areas of their work and internal operations. This guide was prepared to inspire other organizations with the experience and knowledge gained during this process.

At BİRLİKTE, institutionalization was not approached as a one-time goal; rather, it was seen as a process of transformation that develops over time, is fueled by experience, and requires continuity. On this journey, CSOs discovered their own strengths and areas for development in various fields—from governance to communication, from resource management to monitoring and evaluation—guided by self-assessment tools.

In the second phase of the program, an approach was adopted that aimed to mainstream gender equality throughout all components of the institutional structure, with the goal of creating a fairer and more inclusive civil society. This guide, prepared within the scope of the program, aims to share this experience and knowledge with all civil society components and to support organizations in their journey of institutional transformation.
